A total of 1,000 bicycles are involved in the project. Leaflet printing within Sheffield can be used across the transport sector. The ofo hire company will permit people to access bicycles via an app. The app is free and a bicycle costs less than a pound for half an hour of usage. No deposits for new users shall be levied and it will initially be possible to cycle for a fortnight for nothing.
Adam Rose, an operations manager for ofo, told The Star:
“Like countless cities across the UK, Sheffield is marred by air pollution problems, often caused by congestion. By bringing ofo to Sheffield we are offering a clean, affordable and practical alternative. ofo harnesses the fantastic potential of cutting-edge technology but combines it with the classic utility of the bicycle – something which I’m sure will appeal to the residents of a vibrant and thriving city like Sheffield.”
Sheffield City Council has got behind the plan. Jack Scott, a councillor with responsibility for infrastructure and the environment, has endorsed bike sharing. He has stressed the affordability of the proposals. Councillor Scott wants residents of Sheffield to have a variety of transport solutions.
The project has already been trialled in other British cities. Norwich, Oxford, London and Cambridge have all witnessed the bicycle venture in action. Meanwhile, individuals within 20 nations have been engaged to participate by the business.
