Air Commodore Bob Williams got Mackie to write the official story of the Air Force’s health workers. The book is called ‘Wards in the Sky: The RAF’s Remarkable Nursing Service’ and it has been published by a press that specialises in history.
If Mackie wants to generate even more local publicity for her book, she could get her publisher to contact Print companies in Kings Lynn and other towns and villages near Heacham. It may be possible for the author to make more out of her local roots.
According to the author, the text has been given vitality by the use of the words of the nurses themselves. Tales of hardship, romance and humour may help to keep readers of the history entertained. Moreover, the changing nature of the duties of a nurse could sustain the interest of readers.
Mackie has stated that she has tried to avoid listing too many dates. Furthermore, she has claimed that she has steered clear of providing excessive information.
Mackie has told Lynn News:
“I trawled many archives for early stories and then interviewed nurses from the war years and later, up to and including their most recent involvements in Afghanistan.”
