The former site of the Hamond's Grammar School in Swaffham is owned by Lady Melanie Shaw–Sutton, who is looking to transform the building into a craft emporium to allow the selling of antiques and hand-crafted goods. There are also Plans to incorporate an auction house and a café on the site.
Lady Shaw-Sutton commented on the Plans, saying:
“I am only trying to enhance Swaffham and return it to its former glory when visitors and tourists used to flock to the town when it was a busy and vibrant market town, not the unfortunate place it is now with empty shops and buildings.”
The planned transformation could also bring business to printing companies in Kings Lynn and Swaffham as their services – such as poster printing or flyer printing - may be required to produce promotional materials to raise awareness of the products and activities on offer. The owner continued:
“With its large grass area, I feel it would be useful for town events too, instead of holding them in a car park and taking away valuable parking that stops people from coming to town to join in events.”
The proposal has been met with support from the area’s art enthusiasts but the application for planning is still being considered by the local authorities.
