Winter music fest to finally arrive in Regina

Folk music festival Winterruption will arrive at the end of this month, just in time to celebrate winter’s end.

The Winterruption festival started as a mid-winter offshoot of the Regina Folk Festival, designed to combine music artists with winter activities like ice skating, with the event originally intended for earlier in the year but delayed for public health reasons. Some winter events may be out of season, but the rescheduled Winterruption will feature the same line-up of musical artists, including Canadian folk storytellers Snake River, acoustic singer-songwriter Julian Taylor, Toronto-based rapper DijahSB and seven-piece psychedelic band TEKE::TEKE.

Winterruption will consist of three nights of concerts, each with a pair of artists. As part of the build-up to the festival, Winterruption has released a series of “Offerings” for free online, conversations with the artists who will be performing at the festival. Online videos, podcasts and live-streams are becoming a popular way for festivals and live events to raise awareness, often being used alongside time-tested tools such as poster printing and local radio engagement.

The concert series is part of the Regina Folk Festival’s year-long efforts to introduce new musical artists to the Saskatchewan capital, including initiatives like the online “Summer Satellites” concert series.

Winterruption will take place between March 30 and April 2, with concerts taking place at The Artesian and The Exchange.
