Each year, communities and provinces all across Canada host levées to both say farewell to the old year and welcome the new, and Regina has one in the works for this coming January.
The annual Lieutenant Governor’s New Year’s Day Levée will be open to the public, and everyone who calls the province home is in the guest list. This traditional gathering has been held since 1884, and there is lots on the agenda.
The guests at the function will be able to meet and pose for souvenir photos with Their Honours, Bernadette & Rich McIntyre. Retired Inspector Tom Mansfield, former Usher of the Provincial Black Rod and the Principle Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant Governor, will offer the attendees the chance to discover the history of his former position. He will review the Provincial Black Rod, including its design, and how it was gifted to the province by King Charles III. Refreshments will be served, and there will be museum displays, a children’s craft room, live entertainment and an RCMP officer in ceremonial red serge.
Levées and similar events may include reading proclamations addressing the arrival of a new year, as well as printed programs and other materials. Stationery printers will be happy to help, and can offer a full line of bespoke printing services.
This annual celebration will be running at Government House in Regina on January 1st, starting at 1:00 pm. Attendance is free of charge.
