Regina food bank secures funding for downtown move

The Regina Food Bank (RFB) has received financial support to establish a new hub in the city’s downtown following approval by the Regina City Council.

The approved plan would see the Regina Food Bank open a food hub for people in need on Broad Street in downtown, which would be its primary distribution point within the city. The non-profit organization’s existing Winnipeg Street location would continue to be in operation. The new location is planned to provide more choice for visitors seeking food, being set up more like a grocery store instead of distributing pre-arranged food hampers. The RFB currently distributes over 13,000 pounds of food per day to its 12,000 monthly client, and has doubled its distribution over the past three years.

The City Council approved the RFB’s request to lease unoccupied city-owned land to the project for a nominal $1 per year. The City will also be providing $100,000 from its Community Investment Grant Program to the project, as well as providing paving services for the lot. The Food Bank will also be looking for donations from the public to support its renovation of the site, which was a former government liquor store. Charitable organizations such as this often use public events, as well as letters and flyer printing, to appeal to donors.

The proposed Regina Food Bank downtown location would open in early 2024, pending a January vote by the RFB’s board.
