A Regina, Saskatchewan institution is turning to an unusual medium to help tell its story.
The Regina Cemetery is developing an online video game to teach visitors about the many historic events it’s tied to. The game uses a top-down pixelated art style, familiar from earlier generations of video game consoles, and allows the player to explore a recreation of the cemetery. The player’s objective will be to gather as many stories as possible.
The game is being designed by cemetery tour guide Kenton De Jong, as a way to keep the city’s history alive and make it accessible to a new generation. The Regina Cemetery touches on many stories such as the Regina Riot, the Northwest Resistance, and even the Titanic.
Digital media Forms like games and websites are joining more traditional and still-important ways in which institutions preserve their history such as guided tours, brochure printing, self-published Books, and Promotional Products.
De Jong has said the finished game should be available this summer and will be free to play. The advantage of an interactive game over an in-person tour is that many more stories can be included. For now, the cemetery holds public events on special occasions such as Mother’s Day and Remembrance Day to remember lost loved ones and maintains the annual Tree of Memories during the holidays.Get a Free Quote for Promotional Products Get a Free Quote for Books Get a Free Quote for Forms
