Stoney Creek student named a 2015 Citizen of the Year

Muneeb Muzaffar, a high school student at Stoney Creek’s Orchard Park Secondary School, will officially be named a 2015 Citizen of the Year at the end of this month at a Chamber of Commerce reception in Hamilton.

Muzaffar was selected as the winner in the Youth Volunteer Award category because of his outstanding dedication to uniting people across cultures and lifestyles. There were five other young people in the running for this award.

At his school, Muzaffar runs multiple groups in his effort to bring students together for a common cause. Some of these groups are athletic groups, the Translation Team and the Student Leadership Team. Working on organizations such as these requires a variety of resources, as well as other students, teachers and vendors, to support the organizations’ goals. In some instances, services from professional printing companies may be enlisted to help print flyers about a cause or upcoming meeting, or to promote the organizations around the school.

Some of the important work of which Muzaffar is proud includes initiatives to promote anti-bullying, such as a workshop for Grade 9 students as well as inclusivity projects for students in all grades.

The other winner of the 2015 Citizen of the Year award is Dan Lawrie, who is often described as a caring businessman who is eager to help his community through philanthropic causes. Both will receive their declarations on March 31.
