Stoney Creek Food Bank has a new home

The Stoney Creek Food Bank has new headquarters in downtown Stoney Creek; they are finding that the new location is bringing in more people than usual since opening last month.

Their previous building was slated to be destroyed and they could not afford to rent another building in that area. However, they bought the former Creek Community Church and its surrounding grounds for $32 million. They will be adding a community centre to the building in the near future and developing the 6.38 acres of land surrounding the building. The new home of the food bank is 33,000 square feet and contains new shelving and a freezer. Unlike the previous premises, everything is in one room.

With Christmas quickly approaching, the Stoney Creek Food Bank and other food banks will be sending out appeals to the local community by either arranging for flyer printing or the insertion of paper Bags into newspapers and advertising supplements for people to fill. More and more people are in need of the services of food banks. The Stoney Creek Food Bank often feeds over 600 people a month; with the current economic climate this could change. Thankfully, the Stoney Creek Food Bank gets so many requests for volunteers that they must turn people away.

It is easy to donate to a food bank, most supermarkets have a box where you can place canned or boxed food or ask you if you wish to pay a little extra as a donation to your local food bank.
