Men doing yoga on the rise in Stoney Creek
Local Stoney Creek man, George Jakymyshyn, has only been practicing yoga for a decade, but says he’s seen a change in the gender split over that time to what he believes is about 20 per cent

When he first began the discipline, he says that he was surrounded by women, but throughout the past few years, he’s gradually seen the number of men increase.
In 2012, Jakymyshyn took a note from his daughter’s page and became a yoga instructor at Hot Yoga Stoney Creek. He is a co-owner of the studio. His partners, Natalie and Dawn Sarabura, also operate a studio in Ancaster.
The changing demographic of people attending yoga classes means that studios are adapting their marketing strategies. They now have more people to whom they can send direct mailing and promotional pamphlets. They have a larger pool of people from which to draw their clientele, which is good for business.
According to Jakymyshyn, yoga helps him through challenges in life, such as the passing of his mother. He believes that it allows people to open their minds and focus on the positive, rather than the negative. Many also claim that it helps reduce stress.
