Esso Cup to visit Ontario for the first time in 2014
The 6th annual Esso Cup will be coming to Stoney Creek early next year, it has been announced.
The news was revealed at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School by Hockey Canada, which is working closely with Tourism Hamilton, the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association, and the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA).
The tournament, which is billed as Canada's National Female Midget Championship, will be hosted by Stoney Creek’s Sabres team, who will play against five championship-winning sides from the Atlantic, Quebec, Pacific, West and Ontario areas. The final medal game is set to be broadcast live on TSN and RDS.
Speaking about the tournament, which is set to take place in April, OHWA representative Fran Rides said:
She went on to say that both Stoney Creek and Hamilton have great hockey communities and that tourism in the area should see a significant boost.
Local printing companies could be called upon to provide marketing materials in the near future. These may include posters to be hung up around town and flyers to be distributed in direct mail campaigns, reaching those in nearby communities.
The announcement came on the first day of the World Girls Hockey Weekend, which took place in Hamilton from October 11-14. It featured a variety of games with celebrity coaches and several other related events. More information about next year’s tournament can be found on the official Esso Cup website.
