What's Happening in Mississauga, ON…

Mississauga trail to get some TLC

A hands-on environmental service project to remove invasive buckthorn plants from a Mississauga trail is seeking volunteers, and those who take part will be giving Mother Nature a helping hand.

Sawmill Valley Trail is about to get some TLC, as a group of volunteers will be removing buckthorn, which spreads and may be difficult to control. This can be serious, as it means there may be less food for wildlife that depend on native species for food.

The activity will open with a brief discussion of local ecology and why it's important to remove invasive species. They will learn how to identify them in the field, and there will also be a review of the Mississauga Invasive Species Management Plan. It is best for those age 10 and up, and everyone is asked to bring a water bottle as well as a hat and sunscreen. Sturdy footwear with no open toes is a requirement. Any further details will be emailed to the registrants in advance.

Many people care about the environment, and a community service project gives them the chance to get involved in protecting it. Wavers, letterheads and other custom stationery products for an organization can be prepared by print shops.

The volunteers or this morning hosted at the Sawmill Valley Trail will begin at 10:00 am on October 26th. The mississauga.com website can be consulted for more information.
