Weather station will help Edmonton cope with heavier rainfall

The city of Edmonton is the first in Canada to invest in a new technology that it hopes will allow it to be better prepared for bad weather.

The new mini radar

weather station has been installed on an Edmonton rooftop, and is able to scan a radius of 32 kilometers, giving the city’s engineers the most accurate data possible. While unit won’t be able to predict storms, it will be able to help the city’s drainage department make adjustments to the drain storage tanks and pump stations and also to make sure that diversion chambers have been engaged. This will allow the system will be better able to deal with heavy levels of precipitation.

The new unit is currently at Campbell Scientific (Canada) Corp. where city officials are being trained in its use. The plan is for live data feeds from it to come online in May so that the process of gathering information during storms and then using his to create computer models can begin. It is expected that this stage of the procedure will take up to a year. Advances such as these can be promoted using Flyers or other printed material.

Once enough data has been collected and models created the city will be able to use this to determine what course of action would be best to take during different types of storms. Edmonton can be prone to periods of heavy rainfall, and it is hoped that this will minimize their impact.
