Tigers have their day at Edmonton zoo

Long viewed as majestic wild creatures, Tiger numbers in the wild are in sharp decline. The Edmonton Valley Zoo wanted to do something to help, and recently hosted a special event to raise awareness of the issues faced by the giant cats.

The zoo partnered with other organizations from all over the world to help celebrate the International Day of the Tiger.

It is estimated that there may be as few as 3,200 left, and due to habitat loss and poaching, those numbers continue to shrink. This represents a drop of 97% in the past 100 years, and if this continues, some experts predict that five years from now, the only tigers left may be those in captivity.

To spread the word, the zoo held a wide range of activities to help visitors get an appreciation of the situation and to let them know what they can do to make a difference. There were also plenty of things for the younger guests to do, such as face painting, tiger-themed arts and crafts, and even a chance to have their picture taken while giving their best tiger impression.

It is hoped that this will help the current generation of kids to learn to be good stewards of the natural world.

An event like this can also help to raise much needed funds to help support conservation groups. Print companies can be tasked to produce promotional items that not only raise funds, but also help to get the word about this important cause.
