Known as mycorrhizal associations, the connection between plants and fungi is very strong, and an Edmonton spring outing will explore the role this plays in the health of the forest.
The Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts Gallery (ACUA) will be running a talk and walking workshop that will visit a local woodland. It will begin in the classroom, and an optional forage will follow.
The participants will learn how to identify native plants using their flowers and other characteristics, and they will also find out how they are connected to the flushes of fungus that pop up in the spring. The difference between edible morels and toxic false morels will be introduced, and safe and sustainable foraging practices are also on the agenda. After the lecture, the group will head to a location to hunt for mushrooms in the field. Collecting baskets that allow airflow are recommended.
Learning the ins and out of ethical foraging can make the practice more sustainable. Field guides, ID cards Notebooks, and promotional Pens for an activity can be prepared by Print shops.
This introduction to the close ties between plants and fungi will be offered on Saturday, May 31 at 10554 110 St NW, starting at 10:00 am. The location for the outing will be released soon, and tickets start at $20 each.
