A well-known Edmonton attraction could soon be in for an upgrade.
The Telus World of Science announced that it has secured part of the funding that is needed for the project, and it is now looking for ways to obtain the rest. The city has agreed to contribute $12m, and further monies are being sought from both the federal and provincial governments, as well as private sponsors.
The expansion, which has been named the Aurora Project, will see enhancements to both the front entrance and gift shop, as well as upgrades to the planetarium, and cafeteria. A new exhibit space named the Arctic Gallery that covers an area of 10,000 square feet will also be constructed.
The plans do not call for any digging outside of the original structure, and will include ways to capture and recycle rainwater from the roof, pavement and other hard surfaces so that it does not find its way into storm sewers. Signs can be produced that can be used to explain to the pubic how a system like this works, and how it benefits the environment.
The CEO and President of the facility, Alan Nursall, explained that it already gets as many as 600,000 visitors a year, and he hopes that these enhancements will make it even more popular with both locals and visitors who are looking for an experience that is both entertaining and educational.
