Edmonton residents get outdoor safety reminder

The city of Edmonton recently called upon its first responders to give the public a refresher lesson in what to do in times of extreme weather, to protect themselves, their pets and their property.

The annual Get Ready in the Park, which was held in Hawerelak Park, saw local families seize the chance to interact with city and provincial representatives, along with the Edmonton Fire Rescue, Edmonton Police Service, ATCO, and the University of Alberta EPCOR, among others.

According to deputy fire chief Brian Comforth, it provided an opportunity for the public to learn more about the first responders and what they can do for them in times of crisis. They can also learn how to prepare for such an event themselves, should it arise.

Planning for disaster response was spotlighted, along with how to floodproof a home. A printing company can create pamphlets, Posters, and other materials that can help the public to be as ready as they can possibly be, should the city experience an emergency weather event.

Deputy Comforth made the point that the province has experienced significant extreme weather events in recent years, including flooding and serious winter storms.

Comforth has decades of experience as a first responder, and in the past has directly helped people deal with various natural disasters, including the High River flooding that took place in 2013.
