The exhibit ‘Beautiful Monsters: Beasts and Fantastic Creatures in Early European Prints’ is currently showing at the Art Gallery of Alberta. It features over 50 prints from the 15th through 17th century. These include woodcuts, etchings, and engravings created by some of the world's most successful printmakers.
The exhibit was created by the National Gallery of Canada and features works from its collection of prints. Among the artists represented are Albrecht Durer, Jacques Callot, and Andrea Mantegna. The theme of the exhibit is monstrous beings from mythology, religion, history, and imagination.
The scope of prints will give the viewer a very good idea about the history of printmaking, as well as the history of our literary past. It will also give them a chance to view masterpieces such as Mantegna's ‘Battle of the Sea Gods’.
Those who work for Edmonton printing companies or graphics arts studios will no doubt be very interested in this exhibit. They will get a great background on how printmaking techniques have changed over the years and can enjoy some of the best examples of printmaking. It may give them ideas for a future marketing campaign or display.
The exhibit is showing at the Art Gallery of Alberta until March 3, 2013. Admission is $12.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, and $26.50 for a family. The Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday.
