The Calgary City Council has agreed to a plan that will see 50 new police officers hired in the city.
The Police Department made the request for new cops, and the council gave its unanimous approval to the proposal. The Chief of Police, Roger Chaffin noted that the current staffing levels are not sufficient, and that the new positions will allow the department to better meet the needs of the community, such as an increasing number of requests for school resource officers.
The new hires, which could take up their positions as soon as mid-2017, will bring the city’s citizen-to-cop ratio to 613:1, which would lower it from its current level of 616 citizens for every police officer. According to the council, the funding to pay their salaries will come from monies raised through fines levied for driving offenses, such as running red lights and speeding. The average price of these fines was recently raised by as much as 35% by the province.
The city mayor pointed out that this will be more than enough to cover the cost of paying for the new police. Stationery printers can be called upon to produce a variety of items, including Business Cards, that new officers might need when they are hired in a situation such as this.
