Christmas fund proceeds distributed to local not-for-profit groups

The numbers are in for the 2014 Calgary Herald Christmas Fund and over $1 million was raised for non-profit groups around the city.

In total, 12 groups each received a cheque of $93,964 from the fundraising drive. According to the Herald’s editor, Lorne Motley, he is very happy with the amount that was collected, and he also noted that given the current economic climate in the province, the funds will definitely be needed throughout the upcoming year.

The groups who received a contribution from the drive included the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank Society, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary, the Canadian Mental Health Association- Calgary Region, Distress Centre Calgary, Hospice Calgary Society, the Fresh Start Recovery Center, The YWCA of Calgary, and the Alex Community Health Center, plus several others.

The amount raised by the Herald shows just how much good a community can do when it pulls together to help. A printing company can play a part by creating advertisements and other promotional materials, as well as items that can be sold to raise funds, keep track of campaigns , and many other uses as well.

A representative from the drop-in centre noted that the recent downturn in the economy may encourage some funders to become more creative in how they choose to make their donations.
