Calgary residents who are battling cancer will soon have a new place to go for their treatments and other medical support.
The South Health Campus will see the construction of the facility start as soon as possible, with the completion date set for some time in the year 2020.
According to the province’s health minister, Stephen Mandel, it is the first phase of a model for cancer care in the city that will involve two separate sites. A printing company can produce large-sized version of the artist’s concept drawings and other site plans, so the public and other stakeholders can get an idea of what it will all look like.
As part of the plans for the Foothills site, the Tom Baker Cancer Center, which is where patients currently receive treatment, will also be expanded. This is a change from the original idea that involved a single cancer centre at the Foothills hospital complex, which was supposed to begin being built in 2016.
Along with the announcement about the oncology building, other health care facilities in the city will receive upgrades.
The news was also released that funding was being made available for the expansion of the current emergency and pediatrics departments at the Peter Lougheed Center in Calgary. It was likewise confirmed that the vascular and women’s health departments would be renovated.
