Thirty people recently took to the stage in Calgary’s Southcentre Mall to show their support, in a very tangible and personal way, for an organization that raises money for research into cancers that affect kids.
All those who took part made a donation that went further than money: they each donated their hair.
One of those who participated in the event was Julio Gutierrez, who had grown his hair for just such an occasion. He began doing so after he was first diagnosed himself with cancer some years ago. He survived his battle, and felt that he was now ready to “make the cut”. Along with his hair, he also auctioned off his beard so he could make an even bigger contribution.
All told, the event was able to raise nearly $25,000 for the Calgary Kids cancer Care Foundation, which provides support for children and their families who are fighting cancer. A large banner can be hung above the stage to help make the public more aware of who the participants are and why they have agreed to lose their locks.
This was the third time the organization had held the event, and according to the CEO and founder of the foundation, it continues to be popular. He also noted that the kids who are helped by their efforts really appreciate them.
