Volunteers needed to help miniature railway stay on track

The Tullamarine Live Steam Society is seeking volunteers to help keep the Bulla Hill miniature railway on track in 2017.

The group, a not-for-profit organisation, operates the miniature railway two Sundays each month between 12 and 4pm and needs enthusiastic people to hop on board to help run the popular family attraction.

Graeme Precious, one of the society’s engineers, said the volunteer role will ideally suit fun people who would enjoy helping passengers to climb aboard and alight from the railway.

Other tasks include trackwork, gardening and locomotive and carriage maintenance, which is conducted from 10am to 2pm on Wednesdays.

Precious said the minimum age of volunteers is 18 and there is a requirement to have a Victorian Working With Children card.

Featured on many tourism Brochures in Tullamarine, the attraction has proven popular with volunteers who share a common interest in running and building miniature diesel, electric and steam locomotives, according to Precious. He added society members are also keen on model engineering such as stationary traction engines and steam engines.

As a not-for-profit organisation, money raised is syphoned back into the attraction to assist in maintaining and improving facilities.

Precious said all station staff, guards and drivers working at the Bulla Hill Railway are trained to Australian Association of Live Steamers standards.

He said the most rewarding aspect of being a society member and volunteer is the chance to share what has become a favourite hobby with members of the public.
