Uber to launch first trial of flying taxis

Low flying air taxis may soon be available for passengers travelling in Melbourne.

The service will be trialled in the city with a focus on travel between the CBD and Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport. The time to travel from the city to the airport will be drastically reduced to around eight minutes.

The Uber Elevate program will use flying vehicles that are a cross between drone, helicopter and aeroplane, that will be suitable to carry passengers. The flying taxis will cruise at an altitude of 300-600 metres above the ground and will fly at speeds between 240-320 kilometres per hour.

Rechargeable batteries will be used to power the taxis and they will be able to be quickly recharged during the time that passengers take to board and disembark. The cost of the ride is expected to be the same as that charged by Uber Black. Stationery printers may be used to create schedules for new services as well as other informative Brochures.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) spokesman, Peter Gibson said Uber has invested heavily in the project with the company having been in discussions with CASA regarding regulatory requirements.

With the current framework already being capable of accommodating flying vehicles, Gibson said that the program should become commercially available within the next five years.
