In 2019, work will commence on a series of elevated roads and to remove an often congested intersection from nearby Tullamarine Freeway.
The works are aimed at reducing congestion both in and around the airport as well as making access to certain terminals faster. Terminal Four, which was opened in 2015, is currently only accessible by taking a circuitous roadway from the Tullamarine Freeway.
Airport CEO Lyell Strambi told the Sydney Morning Herald the new terminal is used by seven million passengers a year but navigating to the building left many confused. He said:
“We haven’t had the equivalent relief in the [airport] forecourt because [passengers] are still going to the wrong location.”
New road works are often planned with help from graphic design firms. Other works will change the location of some car parking outside terminals. Free pick-ups and drop offs will remain for drivers but they will need to wait in the paid car park. Taxis and the SkyBus service will still collect and drop off passengers in the terminal forecourt.
The works are expected to be completed by 2024. Meanwhile rail access to the airport, which was first proposed in 1963, will not come on line until about 2030.
