Small towns protecting some of Australias most vulnerable

In Tullamarine and Gladstone Park, some of Victoria’s most generous innercity citizens can be found. Information released by the Australian Tax Office for the 2010-11 tax year shows 6.4 out of every 10 taxpayers there donated an average of $196.53 to their preferred charities.

Castlemaine holds the number one spot in town generosity for Victoria and Australia. A huge 7.8 out of every 10 taxpayers donates, on average, $269.41. With a population of little over 8,000 people and 120km drive from Melbourne, it is small town Australia leading the way and residents have an average income less than $55,000.

Across Australia, many small and remote towns see a rate of charity donation of close to eight out of ten taxpayers with average incomes similar to Castlemaine's. At the big end of town, such as Darling Point in Sydney, people have donated the most to charity; a total of $34.5million. Average salaries in the suburb are $221,000.

Typically, Australians will rally and contribute to charities when there is a crisis, and then donate to two or three other charities, according to Fiona Ellis, who is general manager of marketing at Australian Foundation for Disability. The Fundraising Institute of Australia marketing manager, Nicole Mackey, highlights that the sector protects some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

To promote a charity, Print company services, including leaflet printing, can be used. Distributed via volunteers handing out the leaflets, it gives the volunteer the opportunity to talk to people about the cause and leave them with information to read later.
