Young people and children from Tullamarine and throughout Victoria are gearing up for this year’s Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Each year the challenge, now entering its 15th year, is taken up in homes, childhood centres and schools by avid readers.
James Merlino, Minister for Education, launched the challenge and said the activity has the positive effect of inspiring many more kids to pick up a book to read, while also assisting in boosting literacy skills, adding:
“Supporting children to read is one of the most powerful things you can do to encourage a love of reading and literacy – developing skills that will set them up for life.”
Poster printing to promote the Reading Challenge features designs created by Adele Thomas, an accomplished children’s illustrator from Melbourne.
Various taglines inspired her works including Expand your universe’ aimed at secondary school level,Reach New Heights’ for students in primary school and `Spark their imagination’ for the younger children.
The challenge requires students from Years 3 to 10 to read a minimum of 15 Books within a time-frame of six months (February through September), while prep-Year 2 students need to experience or read 30 Books.
Two hundred new Books have been included in a featured list in excess of 12,000 from which to select. The options permit those taking part to read poems, non-fiction Books, picture Books and short stories in a language of their choice.
