New road improves access to airport for travellers

The recent opening of a second major entry to Melbourne Airport will benefit the residents of Tullamarine and the thousands of air travellers who fly in and out of the destination regularly.

The new road effectively links the airport directly to the Ring Road to the M80. Officially opened by Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donellan in June the road known as Airport Drive spans 3.3 kilometres.

New signage and flyer printing is helping to spread the word of the Airport’s new direct route from the western areas of Victoria.

Chris Woodruff, Airport CEO, said the road saves commuters significant time when travelling to the airport from the west.

He said as well as saving time by reducing the levels of congestion on Melrose Drive and Tullamarine Freeway, access to the terminal is now much easier.

At a cost of $100 million, Airport Drive extends four lanes and the completed project also involved the construction of a cul-de-sac as well as the creation of Watson Drive, and environmental upgrades to the local Steele Creek North.

Woodruff said that Airport Drive was a big step forward in providing improved access and convenience for travellers, but emphasised the need to broaden the number of transport options available in the years to come, suggesting that a rail link would be important.
