It is expected that the new route, which, in a landmark move, will connect the state's metropolitan and regional rail networks to Tullamarine Airport, will see commuters travel between the CBD and airport within a 30 minute timeframe.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the new direct route from the CBD and across Victoria, which is expected to be operational from 2029, will provide a service that has been long-awaited by Victorians. He said its construction is scheduled to begin in 2022, and added:
“When complete, the link will slash travel times, bust congestion and be a major boost to the economy.”
The aim of the project is to deliver a fast and affordable rail connection to the airport.
Airport trains will take a path through the Metro Tunnel. This means that families located in the south-eastern suburbs will be able to travel to Tullamarine without the need to change trains. Most other commuters will only require one interchange.
Major upgrades and innovations, such as the new rail route, often spark demand for printing services to produce up-to-date timetables and route maps.
An amount of $5 billion has been committed to the project by the Australian and Victorian governments respectively, and detailed development and planning work is already underway.
