New rail link and freeway widening commitment welcomed

A budget commitment to fund a rail link to the airport and to oversee a program to widen the Tullamarine Freeway has been seen as supporting Victoria’s growth.

The move will streamline the 23km trip from Melbourne Airport – which is based in Tullamarine, Victoria – to the heart of the city’s CBD and improve access for passengers flying in and out of the facility.

Chris Woodruff, Airport CEO, praised the Budget plans, claiming they were critical to meet future demands for access to the travel hub.

He said the airport – which is a major Tullamarine landmark featured on Brochures and postcard printing – was expecting to double passenger numbers by 2034.

The Victorian Government’s commitment to establish a new rail link and widen the freeway will complement the airport’s plans to enhance and upgrade facilities – a move that will require a $10 billion expenditure over the next 20 years.

Woodruff said it was the airport’s largest transformation since its establishment 40 years ago.

As an added bonus, the Victorian Government’s Budget commitment has been seen as an important step towards boosting the state’s freight industry.

According to Woodruff, improved access to the airport was a key component to seeing growth in export markets.

He said widening Tullamarine Freeway to Melrose Drive would effectively increase capacity by about 30 per cent, as well as reduce peak hour travelling time by around 15 minutes from the West Gate Freeway.
