Melbourne awaits new air link to China

Chinese air transport company Xiamen Airlines is planning to begin twice-weekly non-stop flights between Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport and Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport in Fujian Province, China, starting from July 1.

Xiamen is a city of four million people in eastern China, through which many Chinese travellers pass on the way to their destinations. The city previously gained a flight service to and from Sydney late last year, also operated by Xiamen Airlines. More than 23 million passengers are carried by the airline every year between over 50 Chinese cities and 20 overseas airports.

Lyell Strambi, CEO of Tullamarine Airport, expects the new service to be associated with a substantial increase in passengers arriving in Melbourne from China. With this rise in travel for both business and tourism, local businesses catering to international clients may see potential for growth. In addition to the upcoming Xiamen-Melbourne service, the airport has already arranged a service between Melbourne and Chengdu operated by Sichuan Airlines. According to Strambi, plans for closer connections to China continue; the airport has been in communication with a number of Chinese airlines to provide flights to Melbourne from various destinations throughout China, focusing on cities outside of Beijing and Shanghai.
