Greenlight on freeway widening good news for travellers

Plans to widen the Tullamarine Freeway will effectively reduce travel time and congestion between Melbourne CBD and Tullamarine, Victoria, according to Airport CEO Chris Woodruff.

The recent announcement by the Australia and Victorian governments to go ahead with the work was considered by Woodruff as good news.

He said the benefits would be felt by not only travellers to and from Melbourne Airport, but also the 14,000 people who work there, as well as the city's north-west drivers.

Woodruff applauded the State Government for its support and commitment, saying they had recognised the airport's importance as a strategic national asset and giving the project the greenlight had made it a major priority.

He said it was critical that access to the state's aviation gateway be improved now to cater for the anticipated 60 million travellers expected to pass through the airport over the next two decades.

In recent months, the airport has also been committed to preparing for increased passenger numbers by improving access twofold at its Terminal Drive main entrance.

Woodruff said that later in the year, a new elevated loop road, which is part of the airport's long-term road solution, will be opened. A second major entry point will also be available when Airport Drive opens in July.

Signs and poster printing will ensure all visitors will be aware of the new roads and access points.
