Grant will keep student facility open all year

The student welcome desk at Melbourne International Airport in Tullamarine will be expanded, following a $150,000 grant from the State Government.

Operated by the City of Melbourne, the service was introduced in 2009 but was only available during peak arrival periods of students.

The newly secured grant, according to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, will now give students an opportunity to access the service every day for at least three years.

He said the service was a valuable resource for the thousands of students from around the world who came to Melbourne for their studies, and a visit to the Student Welcome Desk was often a key activity on their ‘to do’ Calendars.

The Lord Mayor was excited with the latest grant, which will provide the service every day of the year and help add to the attraction of Melbourne to overseas students.

It is, he said, a project that aims to enhance the experience of international students.

Last year, information packs at the desk were given to in excess of 14,000 students, while a total of 9,937 also approached staff for assistance, according to the Lord Mayor.

The information packs enable international students to experience and feel part of the entire city, which is important because Melbourne hosts one of the largest overseas student populations in the word, he said.

Students can access the Welcome Desk at Melbourne Airport’s Travellers’ Information Service.
