Community asked for feedback on airport operations

Residents in the vicinity of Melbourne Airport, including those in Tullamarine, Victoria, have been involved in completing a survey on the facility’s daily operations.

The community was asked to take part in the study as part of Melbourne Airport’s plans to construct a third runway and extend the east-west runway from 2.2km to 3km, as well as add 15m to its width.

The expansion programme was initiated to enable the facility to cater for the expected increase in passengers and aircraft over the next 20 years.

When complete, the largest types of aircraft, including the Airbus A380, will be able to land on both runways.

Environmental, social, and economic studies regarding the impact of the project are currently being carried out for use as part of the runway development program, which will be subject to a formal consultation period prior to approval.

It is expected that a major development plan for public consultation will be published in 2016. This is required before the proposal can be considered by the Commonwealth Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development for final approval.

Subject to approval by Government, work is proposed to being early in 2017, with aircraft expected to be able to use the new runway between 2020 and 2022.

Printing services were kept busy rolling out the survey Forms included in newsletters, which were distributed to an estimated 50,000 homes in suburbs surrounding the airport.
