Sporting Calendars in Tullamarine are set to add surfing to the list following the recent planning approval of a multimillion dollar surfing lagoon near Melbourne Airport.
Earmarked for a 7.1ha site adjacent to Essendon Football Club’s home base, the $18.5m project was announced recently by the Wave Park Group.
According to Andrew Ross, founder of the Wave Park Group, the new URBNSURF Melbourne development will effectively allow the surf to roll in at Tullamarine.
It will, he said, feature a 320-metre pool. Rides on the 0.6-to-1.9m waves it produces are expected to last over half a minute.
The development will also host a running track, surf training academy, mountain bike pump track, bouldering course, parkour track and climbing wall.
Ross said the new facility will bridge the gap for surf enthusiasts that are part of the urban population, as these people have to travel a long way to catch the waves at Victoria’s well-established surfing spots.
He said the distance can produce a rather inconvenient and frustrating lifestyle for the state’s 20,000 surfers.
Ross described the wave lagoon as being similar to a ‘driving range for surfers’.
He said the waves are consistent in terms of size, speed, power and shape, and provided a great training tool for those taking part.
The surf in the new development is not expected to be up until late 2017.Get a Free Quote for Calendars
