At a cost of $1.87 million, the multi-use Alfrieda Street Civic Plaza is set to become a hive of activity for hosting everything from local cultural events to community celebrations, according to Mayor of Brimbank, Georgina Papafotiou, who added:
"Council has turned the former bus interchange in Alfrieda Street into a vibrant and welcoming space for the community, and a safe gathering space for people to socialise and relax while shopping."
The Mayor said the CBD has been revitalised by the project, which has also increased safety, added more seating and trees and created a welcoming and vibrant setting. The development went further by also adding feature paving, road surfacing, better lighting, safer pedestrian signals and crossings, alongside an array of captivating public art, landscaping and shade trees.
Local brochure printing campaigns aimed at bringing more people into the area have often included attractions like the new Civic Plaza.
The Mayor also said that upgrading and transforming this and other public spaces is essential to keep up with the area's fast-growing population demands.
The 2019/2020 budget for capital works provided the funding to make the project a reality, along with a Level Crossing Removal Authority contribution of $125,000. Visitors to St Albans can also enjoy the sight of brightly coloured raised walls, new paving and plants in the Square.
