Charity calls for donations of pet food

A call has gone out in Tullamarine and across Melbourne, Victoria for donations of food to help homeless pets.

Charitable organisation, Pets of the Homeless, is staging a month-long Pet Food Drive in an effort to gather as many food donations as possible to help struggling pets during the cooler weather.

According to the charity’s founder, Yvonne Hong, winter is a difficult time for both pets and people facing homelessness. She said

“This year we want to get ahead and ensure their welfare throughout the coldest months.”

Hong stressed that all donations received will assist the charity in feeding the greatest number of hungry pets as possible across the city.

This, she said, will include Carrum’s Pantry 5000, at which one third of the 200 people served each week also have pets.

Reaching out to the public for help via Flyers and stories in the media has stirred many people into action, according to Hong.

She said people were holding donation drives in conjunction with schools and work to collect pet food.

Organisations and businesses have also established collection points to simplify the process of making a donation.

Hong, who was previously an animal rescue volunteer and also spent her free time working in a soup kitchen, originally set up Pets of the Homeless Australia two years ago.

She said a walk in the city often revealed homeless people and their pets, and she could not walk by without buying them some food.
