Call for writers to show their talents in Brimbank

Amateur writers who have always wanted the chance to have their work critiqued by a professional now have that opportunity thanks to the Brimbank Writers Awards.

The awards are open to anyone who lives, works, or studies in Brimbank; which means those in Tullamarine can also get involved.

There are categories for short stories and poetry as well as a special section for writers who have English as a second language.

The short story and poetry categories are divided into adult and teenage groups, while the English as a second language category is open to all ages. There is also an open children's category for young writers aged between eight and 12-years-old.

This year, for the first time, the competition also includes a songwriting category for those who would like to showcase their skills with lyrics.

The first and second placed entrants in each group will win a cash prize, with the winner of the adult short story competition taking home $600.

A range of renowned judges, including international poetry slam champion Emilie Zoey Baker, and Charles Jenkins, a musician and songwriter who has released 13 albums, will judge entries.

For those given a confidence boost by the competition, Print companies can help produce small Print runs of Books, so amateur authors can see their work published.

Entries must be submitted online by 5pm on Friday July 12th. The winners will be announced during the Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival, which takes place in September.
