Airport Drive extension to help with traffic and access

Melbourne Airport in Tullamarine, Victoria, has started work on providing a second major entry road into the site, which is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving access.

Mr. Chris Woodruff, the Airport’s CEO, said the extension would be of particular benefit to people accessing the airport from the northwest of Melbourne via the M80 Ring Road.

He said it would also reduce Tullamarine Freeway and Melrose Drive traffic by giving motorists an alternative route into and out of the airport.

In addition, the government’s planned rail link will enter the airport via the extended four lane Airport Drive, with the rail link positioned in the centre.

Providing a second major entry to the terminal by extending Airport Drive would also be addressing the inevitable growth expected in traveller numbers flying in and out of Melbourne Airport. This year, 30 million passengers passed through the terminal.

Locals also stand to benefit from the road works, which will include the establishment of a new road, Watson Drive. This is primarily to provide easy access to the airport’s business park, Airport Drive and Melrose Drive.

Providing four lanes in Airport Drive will also boost access to the business park, where the country’s largest airfreight export centre is located.

This latest $100m extension project in Airport Drive is part of a 20-year $10 billion investment program at the international airport. The work currently being carried out will make great subjects for future airport promotional material, including Brochures and postcard printing.
