Youth invited to build skills in Young Leaders Programme

Council has welcomed a flood of applications from young people who study, work or live in Springvale and the Greater Dandenong and want to take part in this year’s Young Leaders’ Programme.

The City of Greater Dandenong runs the programme, which provides 16 to 25 year olds with a unique opportunity to build skills while having fun, according to Mayor Heang Tak.

He said the popular activity was being run for the seventh consecutive year, and allowed the area’s youth to develop skills in many areas, including project implementation and planning, stress management, conflict resolution, public speaking, and effective communication.

The Mayor said the schedule also covers media and promotion, so marketing services and tools such as the use of promotional Pens, Business Cards and Catalogues may be relevant.

He added that participants would work together in small teams to develop and deliver a community project in conjunction with the Youth and Family Service’s department.

Mayor Tak said the programme has the potential to reap many rewards for both those involved and the greater community.

He said those taking part in the 2016 Young Leaders’ Programme will also gain a better idea of their personal leadership style and its effect on their decision making, while also honing skills to help them become effective leaders within their own groups and the community.

The programme will run from April to October, with a celebratory reception to include friends and family planned for December.
