A streetscape in Noble Park, near Springvale has been transformed by a large new artwork.
The Greater Dandenong Council commissioned the mural, which is the work of well-established artist Hayden Dewar. Its aim is to honour the development and growth of the area.
The suburb's changing population over many years inspired the artist's work, which is drawing attention from all who pass by the colourful mural.
According to Dewar, the artwork represents the spirit and strength of the local community through images of sprawling tree roots protruding from a large river red gum, which is a tree synonymous the with City of Dandenong.
Taking pride of place at the corner of Mons Parade and Ian Street in Noble Park, the mural has been named ‘Roots’ and is in a highly visible position where many pedestrians walk every day on the way to the new railway station. Such iconic artworks are often featured in brochure printing campaigns aimed at informing visitors and locals of key places of interest in the area.
Mayor Jim Memeti said that the act of installing artworks such as Roots in the area was helping to attract more people, as well as adding vibrancy and colour to the streets and creating a much friendlier environment.
The move by Council to embark on a transformation programme of public spaces began in 2006 and has resulted, so far, in the installation of 30 art pieces in key activity centres throughout Greater Dandenong.
