Work is set to commence on removing dangerous railway crossings in Springvale and Mitcham. The massive undertaking will result in an entirely different road and rail configuration.
Almost $350 million has been committed by the Victorian Government to removing the crossings. Many thousands of cars and hundreds of railway services pass by the crossings every day, which means the gates are down for almost half of the morning peak period.
Blocking major arterial roads is frustrating for motorists. With the rail line separate from the road, congestion should ease and result in a much safer journey for all road users.
Design concepts have been released displaying Mitcham rail crossing removal plus an animation of the proposed Springvale level crossing, which is expected to be completed by 2014.
The projects will create many new jobs during the construction. More than 20,000 cars are slowed during peak times at both Mitcham and Springvale. Removing the level crossings will assist with fluent traffic flow by easing congestion on roads. At times, the crossing gates have been down 42 per cent of the time at Springvale.
Demographic changes and increased road use have hastened the final level crossing signal at Springvale. Pedestrians and drivers will no doubt be safer with the changes.
Mitcham and Springvale residents are also set to benefit from premium underground railway stations with safer and improved pedestrian access.
