Girls aged 10 to 13 have been invited to join the Springvale Girl Guides as part of an expansion program.
Including the new age group in the Guides of Springvale, Victoria, has been applauded as a welcome extension to the existing programme, according to the organisation’s Erin Wicking.
The community development officer said that, after launching the programme for 5 to 9 year olds in July last year, the unit was ready to grow to include the older girls.
She said guiding was able to offer something quite unique for girls and women, including opportunities to challenge themselves, get creative, make friends, work in teams, play games and take on new skills.
Each year, guides from around the state and country also attend special camps and events, such as the recently held Girls Rock 2015, which gave guides from throughout the state an opportunity to hear from speakers on topics relating to girls now and in the future.
Members also participate in leadership weekends, awards and fundraising events, many of which are advertised through local media and flyer printing.
The history of girl guides in Springvale dates back several decades.
Wicking said the Springvale unit met on a weekly basis for everything from community action projects to outdoor adventures and team challenges.
Girls in the new 10 to 13 age group will now meet on Wednesday nights.
