What's Happening in Mulgrave, VIC…

Springvale area part of satellite CBD plan

A key state planning body has put together a plan to help deal with traffic congestion and other economic costs to business associated with Melbourne’s rapid population growth.

The Victorian Planning Authority says it wants to create seven extra CBD areas across the city, including two close to the suburb of Springvale.

The population of Melbourne recently topped five million, well ahead of growth projections, and inner parts of the city have become noticeably congested by both foot and road traffic. Australian demographer Bernard Salt told abc.net.au that when cities surpass five million people, a model of multiple commercial hubs can work better than a centralised business area. Salt said it can open up fringe areas for affordable housing:

“So you can live on the edge, and commute into your nearest CBD.”

A planned CBD near Monash University to Springvale’s west would add to the precinct’s existing education institutes and medical facilities, while another at Dandenong to the south could accelerate an already growing business community. Extra economic growth in outer areas could create more demand for business card printing services.

Another satellite business hub would be in Werribee in Melbourne’s west, where local councillor Kate Roffey says the idea would help support companies who wish to headquarter there and in turn create jobs for an expected increase in resident numbers.
