Next February, the centre will begin operations from its new James Street premises in Dandenong. The new base has been welcomed by CEO Naomi Paterson, who described it as the beginning of a new chapter for Cornerstone. She added:
“Having a space that’s more permanent and that also has an office means we’ll be able to start up some of those programmes that we want to do, and put down some roots.”
Visitors to the centre are provided with somewhere safe to receive assistance and discuss their problems. Services include providing a referral to relevant service providers or giving visitors a warm meal.
Patrons will also be able to gain valuable assistance from Cornerstone’s partner groups such as Orange Sky and Clean as Casper, who will also be moving into the new premises.
Cornerstone attracts a regular attendance of about 100 people, including street community members, and those dealing with substance abuse and mental health concerns. To spread awareness, the relocation of community organisations such as this are often the subject of flyer printing campaigns.
Cornerstone is also hoping to hear from any tradespeople or community members who can assist with a cleaning bee at the old premises as well as with work to complete the new office.
