Myer erected a seven story sign that had banner printing on it:
“Early bird get’s the right size.”
The incorrect placement of the apostrophe, sometimes referred to as the grocers’ apostrophe, has had pendants from as
far away as Springvale lampooning the retail giant on social media for the gaffe.
Mic tweeted, “Myer’s use of the word get’s is just another example of how illiterate marketing people are,”
Rhys Fox tweeted: “Wonder if Myer’s ad genius ‘get’s’ the joke is on them yet? Stop the abuse of apostrophes now!”
During the scandal, the terms ‘@myer_mystore’ and ‘apostrophe’ were trending on Twitter.
One reader of the Herald Sun newspaper asked:
“Why on earth would anyone think that the word gets would need an apostrophe?”
A spokesperson for Myer admitted the banners had been distributed and displayed in every Myer store around Australia.
The spokesperson for Myer said:
“We offered our sincerest apologies for this error to customers who took the time to raise this with us.”
The company’s Twitter account went as far as to make light of the meltdown:
“Thanks for all your feedback on our printing error - we’re getting this fixed at the moment! And we’re glad you’re all so passionate about our great new Stocktake Sale creative!”
Myer also had to apologise for another signage mistake, this time printing the word ‘Satruday’ instead of Saturday.
