Springvale residents live in one of the city’s most diverse and multicultural regions, and the exhibition at the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre in nearby Dandenong provided an opportune way to learn about cultural and ethnic differences. The Burqas, Veils, and Hoodies exhibition showcased this diversity through photography, masks, fabrics, and video.
David O’Halloran, curator of the exhibit, got the idea after moving to the area three years ago. The seed germinated as he noticed the array of people and ethnic backgrounds amongst the local population. Mr O’Halloran said:
“I just saw an opportunity to break down some of those stereotypes.”
The exhibits were created in a variety of mediums and styles. This included photography of judge’s wigs, chador shapes inlaid with Persian text, bronze face masks created from women’s moisturiser and semi-abstract impressions created using cotton thread. Some exhibits have been produced as permanent art form, while others were created solely for the show.
Mr O’Halloran is very pleased with the positive reaction to the exhibition, with patrons surprised at the poetic and harmonious nature of the event. Initial concerns about the show having a divisive political feel were soon dispelled, with the exhibition instead embracing of the attractive variety of culture and custom in the local region.
Many of the pieces which were exhibited are now for sale, and with Print company expertise for presentation and preservation, would make attractive features and talking points for the office or home.
