The concept, seemingly impossible a few short years ago, is quickly becoming a reality. Futuristic advances in programming, robotics, and 3D printing have opened up possibilities for carbon fibre and Kevlar use in building lightweight, energy efficient structures.
Architect Roland Snooks, a lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne, writes computer programs that create revolutionary architectural designs. Speaking about the developments, he said:
“I think we are on the verge of a revolution in architectural design and construction.”
Snooks spent almost eight years in the United States working with new technologies, exploring relationships between advanced materials and robotic techniques, and the potential to create new architectural Forms. He hopes new homes in Springvale can be constructed by robots as early as 2033.
Printers capable of producing 25cm cubes are becoming cheaper, and competition is fierce to successfully construct 3D printed houses. Snooks believes the first non-robot constructed printed house could happen within the next 12 months.
The developments are exciting for the printing industry also, as new relationships are formed with a variety of industries.
The future of algorithmic design in architecture is bright. RMIT has purchased industrial robots similar to those used in automobile manufacture, with a plan to adapt them for the construction of buildings. It is a mouth-watering prospect for printing services in Springvale, eager to get in on the ground floor of this new building boom.
