Racing cars from days gone by will take to the track at this year’s Historic Sandown meet in Springvale next month.
Motoring enthusiasts are set for a weekend to remember with 400 vintage vehicles competing in 40 events which will be overseen by a host of racing greats.
Three-time Distinguished Flying Cross recipient Tony Gaze, who was also awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to motor racing, will be honoured with a special tribute at the event.
The motoring enthusiast and former World War II Spitfire ace was credited as being the nation’s first Formula One Grand Prix driver. He also teamed with fellow countrymen Stan Jones and Lex Davison to drive the first Holden vehicle to compete in the Monte Carlo Rally of 1953. The tribute will see a replica of the historic car take to the tarmac.
Cheetah racing cars, which notched up championship wins throughout the 1970s and 80s, will also be on display. Built by Brian Shead at a facility not far from the Sandown circuit, the Cheetahs lived up to their lightning fast name-sake and proved a mighty force on the track, securing five Australian F2 championships in a row between 1984 and 1988.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive in their collectible, classic and vintage cars to the event, which takes place over the weekend of November 8-10.
