Community groups in south-east Melbourne are being given an opportunity to state their case for utilising the Springvale municipal building in Greater Dandenong.
The building will be vacated by council staff when they move into new premises in Dandenong next year. Interested groups have until August 23 to stake a claim for the old property. In any case, the council is still undecided if it will proceed with negotiations or call in the wrecking ball to the Springvale Rd offices.
Estimates for refurbishment add up to $10million, leading a hasty council decision to look at options for usage by community groups. Interested groups are requested to assist in co-operative funding to make keeping the building a viable option.
The council is also undergoing a Springvale Civic Precinct master plan, which may also decide the future of the office block.
Councillor Sean O’Reilly doesn’t want the building to be demolished, preferring to first investigate alternative options. Cr Peter Brown would also like to save the offices and transform the building into a focal point for community groups. Last week, he questioned Mayor Angela Long regarding her stance on the matter.
The council continues to investigate possibilities for non-commercial tenants or sub-letting to a third party. Springvale is a populous community-orientated region, with numerous clubs, societies and artists, all of whom would be greatly benefited by the opportunity to function within a community hub.
